My Shop: Pin-Up Garage

Pitkän hiljaisuuden jälkeen haluaisin esitellä projektini, jonka parissa olen työskennellyt viime kuukaudet: olen perustanut oman lifestyle-myymälän Helsingin Tapanilaan. Oman vaatemyymälän perustaminen on ollut unelmani aina ensimmäisestä työpaikastani asti, jolloin toimin jouluapulaisena ruotsalaisen vaateketjun myymälässä. Nyt monien loppupeleissä onnekkaiden sattumien kautta minulla oli vihdoin mahdollisuus toteuttaa unelmani, ja tässä se nyt on: Pin-Up Garage!

 

Myymäläni valikoimaan kuuluu nimensä mukaisesti pin-up-tyylisiä nastenvaatteita, kenkiä, alusvaatteita, sukkia, kirjoja, asusteita, koruja ja sisustustuotteita. Myymälä sijaitsee vanhan autokoritehtaan kiinteistössä, joka on muutettu liikekiinteistöiksi. Nimi Pin-Up Garage juontaa juurensa siis myös kiintestön historiaan. Ja tokihan autot ja moottoripyörät ovat kiinteä osa fiftarikulttuuria, johon pin-upkin lukeutuu.

 

Tässä muutamia yleiskuvia myymälästä:

 

 

 

 

 

Myymälän valikoimaan olen valinnut paljolti sellaisia merkkejä ja tuotteita, joita ei juuri muualla Suomessa myydä. Esim. Bernie Dexterin ja emmy designin tuotteet ovat tällä hetkellä saatavissa Suomessa vain Pin-Up Garagessa. Muita merkkejä tällä hetkellä ovat HellBunny, Collectif, Pinup Couture, Leg Avenue ja omaa tuotantoamme olevat Pin Me Up ja Amalie B. Design.

 

Valikoiman punaisena lankana on naisellinen pin-up tyyli. Valkoiman sydämen muodostavat erilaiset mekot, joiden lisäksi valikoimassa on hameita, toppeja, neuleita, takkeja jne. Housuja myymälän valikoimasta ei kuitenkaan löydy.

Myymälän sovitushuone on myymälän tyylistä poiketen ylellinen ja kunis kuin koru. Tilavassa huoneessa mahtuu hyvin sovittamaan vaatteita ja pyörähtelemään peilin edessä.

Lisäpalveluna myymälässä toimii myös ompelimo. Ompelimossamme on mahdollista teettää vaatteita mittatilauksena joko oman mallistomme valikoimasta tai oman mallin perusteella juuri se unelmie vaate. Autamme tarvittaessa asikasta myös suunnittelussa. Teemme tarvittaessa myös korjausompeleet niin myymiimme tuotteisiin kuin asiakkaan omiinkin vaatteisiin. Miksi heittää pois hyvää vaatetta kun sen voi korjata ompelemalla jälleen sopivaksi? Ompelimossamme on myös brodeerauskone, eli teemme ammattitaidolla myös brodeeraukset kaikkiin tekstiilituotteisiin.

 

Myymälämme sijaitsee aivan Tapanilan juna-aseman vieressä osoitteessa Viertolantie 2 B, alakerrassa. Junan lisäksi paikalle pääsee kätevästi myös bussilla. Pihalla on myös runsaasti ilmaista parkkitilaa.

Vintage Workshopping with Olivia Rouge

Onko kenenkään muun mielestä vaikeaa laittaa hiuksia, meikataja keksiä uusia hiustyylejä itselleen? Minusta on, ja siksi innostuin kuullessani että kuuluisa burlesque-esiintyjä Olivia Rouge oli järjestämässä Vintage Workshopin. Workshopin tarkoituksena oli opettaa erilaisia tapoja laittaa hiuksia ja meikata vintagetyyliin. Niinpä viime lauantaina suuntasin Mini Cooperini kanssa kohti Tamperetta, tarkoituksenani nauttia hyvästä seurasta, lasillisesta shampanjaa ja tietenkin saadakseni oppia vintage stailaukseen!

Does anyone else find it difficult to do your own hair and make-up and to come up with different kinds of styles? I do, and so I got very excited when I noticed that the famous Finnish burlesque performer Olivia Rouge was arranging a Vintage Workshop. The aim of this workshop was to teach a few ways to do your hair and make-up in vintage style. So, last Saturday I drove my Mini Cooper to Tampere to enjoy some good company, champagne and to get some some vintage styling!

Workshop järjestettiin Olivian työhuoneella, jossa hän suunnittelee ja valmistaa vaatteita ja asusteita, joita myydään hänen verkkokaupassaan. TYöhuone ei ollu tkovin suuri, mutta onneksi meitä osallistujia oli vain neljä, joten mahduimme hyvin. Tässä hieman kuvia työhuoneesta ja tuotteista, joita Olivia valmistaa ja myy:
The workshop was being held in Olivia's showroom, where she designs and makes clothing and accessories that are sold in her webshop. The showroom is not very big, but luckily there were only four of us ladies attending. Here are some pictures from the showroom and the products Olivia sells there:

Workshop kesti neljä tuntia, ja sen aikana ehdimme oppia useita erilaisia kampauksia. Olivia näytti meille aina esnsin kuvan kampauksesta, sitten hän teki sen omiin hiuksiinsa ja lopuksi saimme itse harjoitella kampauksen tekemistä omiin hiuksiimme Olivian opastaessa ja antaessa vinkkejä tarvittaessa.

During the four hours we learned several ways to do our hair. Olivia showed us the style first from a picture, and the she demonstrated the style by doing her own hair. Then it was our turn to practise, and Olivia gave us tips and helped when needed.

Kampakiharoiden tekeminen oli minun taidoillani liian haasteellista, sillä otsatukkani on siihen liian lyhyt. Mutta Olivian hiuksissa ne näyttivät ihastuttavilta:

Lopussa harjoittelimme hiusten kihartamista lämpörullilla. Tähän asti lämpörullat ovat olleet ainoa asia, mitä olen hiuksilleni osannut tehdä. Mutta uutta minulle oli se, että hiukset pitää varovasti harjata rullien jälkeen! Tämä kikka tosiaan toimii: kiharat näyttävät paljon tuuheammilta ja kauniimmilta kun ne harjaa. Sillä aikaa kun lämpörullat jäähtyivät hiuksissamme teimme vintage-tyylisen meikin. Kunnon pohjustus, mustat silmänrajaukset pienillä siivillä, tekoripset, kaunis poskipuna ja pin-up-punainen huulipuna ovat tyylin perusta.

In the end we practised rolling the hair to hot rolls. Untill this, the hot rolls were the only thing I was able to do with my hair. What I learned, was that you're supposed to brush the hair after the curls are ready. And it really works: the curls look so much thicker and prittier when you brush them! When the hot rolls were cooling, we also did the make-up in vintage style. A good base, black eyeliners with small wings, fake eyelashes, beautiful blush and pin-up red lipstick are really the base of the style.

Vintage-tyylin oppimisessa on muutama tärkeä asia, jotka on hyvä muistaa: kahdet lämpörullasetit (niistä tarvitsee vain pieniä ja keskikokoisia), hyvä kampa jossa on piikki, paljon hiuslakkaa ja mikä tärkeintä: paljon kärsivällisyyttä harjoitteluun. Kiharoita on vaikeaa tehdä käsin jos hiuksia ei ole leikattu oikeaan mallin. Ja minun hiuksia ei ole leikattu niin. Mutta harjoitus tekee mestarin.

After the workshop, I can say that the important thing when starting is to have at least two sets of hot rolls (you only need the small and the medium ones), a good comb with a stroke, much hairspray and most importantly: patience to practise. The curls are not easy to make by hand if your hair isn't cut in the right manner. And mine isn't. But practise makes perfect.


Loppujen lopuksi olin aivan valtavan tyytyväinen päivään. Sain viettää sen neljän upean naisen hyvässä seurassa, ja bonuksena sain uusia ideoita ja todella opin mitä voin hiuksilleni tehdä. Ehdottomasti suosittelen workshopia kaikille kiinnostuneille: myös ammattilaiset voivat saada sieltä uusia ideoita. Joten lämmin kiitos, Olivia, mukavasta päivästä. Ihailen luovuuttasi ja sitä, että olet ideoinut ja järjestät tällaisia tapahtumia!

In the end I was very pleased with the result and the whole day. I got to spend a day fith four wonderful ladies, and as a bonus I got new ideas and I actually learned to work with my hair. I definetly do recommend the workshop for everyone: you can get new ideas even if you are a beauty professional. So thank you Olivia for the nice day, I love your creativity and the fact that you have innovated this kind of event!

Eikä muutenkaan hassumpi tapa viettää iltaa tyttökavereidensa seurassa!

And finally, here's a tip for everyone who's wondering about what to arrange to a bride for her bachelor's party: you can order Olivia to keep this kind of workshop to the party, and as a result you all will have a good time, learn to do your hair and you will all look beautiful for the rest of the night! Not a bad way to spend an evening with your girlfriends!

Aalto University, School of Art and Design opened the touring exhibition Glass Design Update in Autumn 2009 as a part of Tokyo Designers Week. The selected participants are 13 MA degree students and professional young designers. Their fields are not only glass design but also painting, architecture, furniture design and product design.

During the summer, the Finnish pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and its content will be featured in an exhibition at Design Forum Finland. This miniature exhibition will present the pavilion, designed by JKMM Architects, and its design exhibition, created by the Muotohiomo agency. The showing at Design Forum has been designed by Mari Relander of Muotohiomo.
Opened to the public in the beginning of May, the pavilion at the World Expo 2010 presents a broad selection of Finnish design to the Chinese public. The World Expo's theme, Better City – Better Life, is an opportunity to display Finnish skills and know-how through the immediate human environment and the objects and artifacts of everyday life, an area of design in which Finland has always been prominent. In addition to the exhibition at Design Forum Finland, Finland at the World Expo 2010 is also presented on the Internet at www.finlandatexpo2010.fi.

Next year a group of American universities will take part in the Solar Decathlon competition organized by the U.S. Department of Energy. The aim of the competition is to design and build a zero-energy house. One of the teams participating in the competition is from the University of Tennessee. The team has designed and built a house in cooperation with interior design students from Helsinki’s Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. They have been asked to create the lighting and interior design for the house.
During the Helsinki Design Week, there is an opportunity to visit the house through an experiential exhibition at Fredrikintori. Big screens will show the team’s progress, from its first test house to the actual UT Zero Energy House that will participate in the competition. The story can be followed from a café in Fredrikintori in an atmosphere created by lighting specifically designed for the event. A platform will be built at the location with umbrellas hanging above which will aid the atmospheric lights.

Kalevalakehto Opening

In August 26, the Kalevalakehto will open in Seurasaari; designed and built by American and Finnish students of architecture and design, it is inspired by the Kalevala as a modern design. The project will be located at Seurasaari, a natural place removed from the bustle of Helsinki, yet at its heart, a nexus of folklore, culture, and nature. What better place to create a 'legacy marker' to call forth all that makes Helsinki unique in the modern world: a crossroads of innovative ideas and networks, ancient mythology, and deep-rooted culture, with a strong legacy of modern design.
2009’s MyHelsinki project fostered the connection to Travis Price Architects and the Spirit of Place-Spirit of Design university design-build expedition program, which for fifteen years has brought architecture students to create meaningful places to echo and celebrate the most ancient cultural lyrics of place within a modern design. All the creations were at remote sites as diverse as the mountains of Machu Picchu to the rugged west coast of Ireland to the sacred sites of Nepal.
Spirit of Place-Spirit of Design stirred a heartfelt resonance in Helsinki, steeped in its deep ancestral mythology, the Kalevala, while celebrating its identity as a world-class design city. The timing of the Kalevalakehto is ideal with the foundation of Aalto University, and the celebration of Helsinki as 2012 World Design Capital.
Guidance to the site starts on the bridge of Seurasaari at 5.30pm. The opening ceremony starts on the site at 6 pm.

ITE-muoti: Self-Taught Fashion
"During this past spring, Kuukausiliite (the monthly paper supplement within the Helsingin Sanomat), along with the Union of Rural Education and Culture and Helsinki Design Week, began to collect Finnish ITE-muoti (Self-Taught Fashion) – fashion designed and made by Finns. The criteria was measured by novelty value, creativity and inventiveness. There was no age limit or a requirement for education in the field of design.
The works were evaluated by a panel that included Kari Korkman, the Director of Helsinki Design Week, Liisa Heikkilä-Palo, the Director of Cultural Affairs from the Union of Rural Education and Culture, Noora Niinikoski, a stylist and Marimekko designer, Sanna Tuominen, Product Manager from Kuukausiliite and Liisa Jokinen, a Kuukausiliite contributor and freelance reporter.
Forty-five of the most unique fashion pieces made it through to a qualifying round, and from there a further cull was made to select the cream of the crop, which will be displayed during Helsinki Design Week at the Cable Factory’s Merikaapelihalli. Those deemed to be the best pieces were also styled for a fashion article published in the August edition of Kuukausiliite."
I read the article on Kuukausiliite and am very ambitious to  see the creative solutions of ITE-fashion!

Brainport Design For Happy LivingCable Factory
"The Dutch Brainport Design display for the Happy Living exhibition brings together a cross-section of creations from our sister design city, Eindhoven, to the Cable Factory.
Brainport combines conceptual and industrial design, whilst emphasizing the significance of the products themselves. The 12 Brainport concepts will include Kiki van Eijk’s Soft Series which tempts the sense of touch, Bobike’s bicycle saddle which is clearly made for everyday use, and finally, Soundsteps, which offers an alternative to children’s computer games. Eindhoven was the competiting city for World Design Capital 2012, and a rumour says that the famous trend guru Li Edelkoort was her share on the campaign of Eindhoven. I'm very eager to see design news from the design city of Neatherlands!

FreeDOM OF CreATION’S 10-YeAr ANNIVerSArY exHIBITIONCable Factory
"Design company Freedom of Creation is celebrating its 10th year in business. FOC is a pioneer in the use of 3D printing technology in the design industry. Janne Kyttänen and his team create computer models that can then go into production anywhere in the world.
FOC’s 3D design has produced lamps, furniture, interior decoration solutions, iPhone cases and pretty much everything else we see have seen in 3D.

"Where are the roots of European fashion and design? Where are new ideas generated and how do they expand? How can Europe profit from its rich cultural heritage when creating stronger economic well-being?
"Tales about European fashion and design" is a seminar arranged by the European Cultural Foundation Network of Finland. Speakers from Finland and abroad are called on to analyse the context of European fashion and design from historical and present viewpoints."

HÄ? — Finnish-Chinese visual dictionaryCable Factory
"First there is confusion, which is followed by understanding. In each image of the HÄ? — Finnish-Chinese visual dictionary, something Finnish is combined with the equivalent Chinese character. The name HÄ? — a Finnish expression of amazement — reflects the theme.
Kasino Creative Studio’s HÄ? is influenced by old Chinese visual dictionaries in which language is taught to children with drawings. The simple execution of the imagery opens up big, relevant themes, such as education and understanding foreign cultures. The visual dictionary is a way of presenting both Finnish and Chinese culture in a way that crosses cultural and lingual barriers.
The visual dictionary is created by the internationally awarded Kasino Creative Studio in association with Shanghai-based artist Pan Jianfeng, who designed the Chinese characters. Kasino Creative Studio's team consists of creative director Pekka Toivonen, scriptwriter Tero Kartastenpää, photographer Jussi Puikkonen and editor Jonathan Mander. The End Of The Story: FutureCable Factory
"The End Of The Story: Future event gathers together young artists of the future who are not yet part of the established structures. The event, produced by Helsinki Design Week, was created so that new talents could showcase their skills and become involved in dialog with other designers as well as the general public.
Among the invited artists are graphic designer Sakke Soini, fashion designer Kirsi Nisonen, photographer Kirmo Ekholm and Gorilla Magazine from the field of publication design. The participants were asked to display a product or previous work which represents Helsinki Design Week’s theme of storytelling.The product display can also utilize the exhibition technology of the Cable Factory’s Merikaapelihalli."
I admire Kirsi Nisonen's style, that's why I want to see this! Ok, also because I'm always interested in future visions, too.

Slow Design Week Finland vol. 4 - Tuohipäivä

Tuohi taipuu moneksi
Tämän päivän teemana oli tuohi ja sen käyttö. Tuohi sopii teemana osaksi Slow Design Weekiä mainiosti. Tuohi on ekologinen materiaali ja kuuluu ehdottomasti tärkeänä osana suomalaiseen käsityöperinteeseen. Kuitenkin Suomesta löytyy enää yhden käden sormilla laskettava joukko tuohityön ammattilaisia. Meitä oli opettamassa kuopiolainen Anelma Savolainen, jolla oli hyvin monipuolinen osaaminen tuohitöiden teosta. Hän esitteli meille muutamia tekemiään tyohitöitä diaprojektorin avulla, tässä niistä muutamia ihan livenä:

Tuohen pintaa, johon oli ompelukoneella tikattu koristekuvioita.

Tässä kalastusverkonpainossa oli kivi sisällä. Järvivesi oli muokannut tuohen pinnan ihanan nahkamaiseksi.

"Tuohinoppia"

Tuohi on oiva Slow Design -materiaaliTuohi sopii myös siksi hyvin Slow Designin aiheeksi, että se on materiaalina hyvin hidasta työstää. Tuohi on nykyään hyvin vaikeasti saatavissa oleva materiaali. Tuohta ei saa ottaa elävistä puista, vaan se otetaan joko juuri kaadetusta tai kaatotuomion saaneesta koivusta. Paras aika tuohen irrottamiseen on "tuohikuu", joka kestää noin kesäkuun puolivälistä heinäkuun puoliväliin. Tällöin tuohi irtoaa puusta helpoiten. Tuohen perässä voi joutua matkustamaan satoja kilometrejä. Anelma kertoi, että hän aloittaa aikaisin keväällä soittelemaan mitä erilaisimpiin paikkoihin löytääkseen hakkuupaikkoja, joista saa käydä ottamassa tuohta. Siis jo materiaalin hankintatapa on hidas prosessi.

Materiaalina tuohi on hyvin kaunista. Se on myös hyvin moni-ilmeinen materiaali. Jokainen tuohi on erilainen paksuudeltaan, tummuudeltaan ja pinnaltaan. Jokainen tuohiesine onkin tämän vuoksi uniikkikappale. Yksilöllisen luonteensa vuoksi tuohiesineitä on mahdotonta jäljitellä tai kopioida. Tässä tuohen kaunista pintaa:



Tuohen työstäminenOmat lähtötietoni tuohesta olivat lähes mitättömät. Lapsuuden kodissani on ollut itse asiassa yllättävän paljonkin tuohiesineitä, mm. rasioita ja tuohitorvi. Silti olin yllättynyt esim. siitä, että tuohitöissä yleisimmin käytetään oikeana puolena sitä puolta, joka on puuta vasten, ei valkoista puolta kuten olin ajatellut. Uutta minulle oli myös se, miten helposti tuohta pystyy halkaisemaan ja saamaan siitä ohuempaa materiaalia, joka on taipusampaa työstettävää. Uutta minulle oli myös se, että tuohi käpristyy kosteudessa ja keitettäessä. Tässä esineessä on kauniisti hyödynnetty tuohen käpristymisominaisuutta:


Ensimmäisenä harjoituksena leikkasimme tuohesta nauhoja, jotka halkaisimme ohiemmiksi. Näin tehdyistä nauhoista aloimme punoa hiirenpinoa. Tässä näytteenä eräs työvaihe punonnasta:


Tuohipäivän tuotoksiaYhteisen harjoituksen jälkeen teimme itse omia tuohiharjoituksiamme. Tässä tuohipäivämme ideasatoa:

Rasia, jonka sivut kiinnittyvät toisiinsa tuohen käpristymisominaisuuksien ansiosta. Valmista rasiaa on käytetty kiehuvassa vedessä, joka on saanut reunat kääriytymään rullalle.

Perinteinen tuohituokkonen, joka on tehty taivuttamalla tuohta. Taitokset kiinnittyvät pajukepillä, jonka ympäri kiersin keitettyä tuohta.

Muotia tuohesta?Tuohi osoittautui materiaalina yllättävän monipuoliseksi ja myös moni-ilmeiseksi. Siitä voi työstää hyvin monenlaisia esineitä, ja sen käytössä on vain mileikuvitus rajana. Näimme kuvia mm. tuohivaatteista. Asusteisiin tuohi sopii ehkä vaatetusta paremmin: siitä voi valmistaa hattuja, vöitä, solmioita, laukkuja, jalkineita jne. Kuka tietää milloin näemmekään Pariisin muotiviikolla mallin astelevan lavalle tuohisandaaleissa, tuohilaukku kädessään....
